Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a powerful tool which is provided FREE of charge by Google Inc. The software is integrated into your website, and provides a comprehensive set of analysis tools to help you diagnose your websites performance.

The analytics software provides many reports based on your website traffic (it also records all historical data so that you can make easy year on year comparisons), and the interface is extremely intuitive and easy to use.

Within the system you can add multiple websites, and monitor their performance. Each visitor is tracked by the software - where they enter from, which pages they view, how long they spend on the site, where they leave your site, and many more features. You can then use this data to identify weak spots, or to highlight the best keywords that visitors are using to find your site.

Traffic Sources

Most of your website traffic is driven from the numerous search engines available. Identifying where you are particularly weak in the search engine listings can help you create a focused marketing campaign targeted at specific areas.

Goals

In order to funnel your website visitors to an endpoint of your choice, you can create "Goals" to help you monitor the arrival and exit points along a particular process. This helps you pin-point a particularly weak page or process within the system, for example, "Why do 70% of my visitors view the cart, but only 20% of them continue on to the next stage?". Minimising the drop out is very important, and providing smooth and easy to use functionality certainly helps you to convert more customers.

Page Overlay

A particularly useful tool is the page overlay function. This essentially takes a view of one of your web pages, and overlays it with some numbers indicating how many times each of your links has been clicked. By determining the popular links, you can help guide your visitors to their chosen destination.
